Rock Around the Clock
Today I went to Zurich. The weather was miserable. It was cold and rainy, but the sun did manage to peek out around dinnertime. I also would not be surprised if I wake up tomorrow and my feet are missing.
When I got to the Zurich Main Station, I looked for the tourist center to grab a map of the city. They had a flier for a ghost tour - the tour was even given in English. I would have loved to go on it, except that it doesn't run in July.
I met my Swiss/American buddy, Chantal, for lunch. Afterwards I walked down one side of the river (which feeds into Zurichsee, the lake in Zurich). There wasn't much going on, on that side of the river. I found the lake and some ducks. It would have been fun to feed them crackers. I also saw a ton of boats (docked, not sailing), and I also saw someone swimming, which I thought was weird because of the weather.
So I walked back in the direction of Zurich Hauptbahnhof down the street that ran along the other side of the river. There also wasn't much going on over there but I did run into a tour group. Unfortunately it wasn't in English so I kept walking. I saw a few neat looking clock towers and architecture.
Then I found all the shopping. And discovered the Moevenpick ice cream, made in Switzerland. I was in heaven for a while.
Zurich is a much bigger, much busier city than Bern. I also noticed that the trams are much older there. The people there look very European and are into high fashion - not like in Bern, where everyone looks German and shops at H&M.
When I got home, I grabbed a sandwich from the Migros To-Go store in the Bern Bahnhof. At which time, I also decided I needed something to drink that wasn't water. So I walked to the nearest Coop. There I found all the juices and teas. One of which was tea with Swiss cannabis flavor - yes, you all read that right. I tried to take a picture but it came out very blurry. Of course I bought it just to see what cannabis flavored tea tasted like - I'll let you know when I try it. I'm already full from "Red berry" flavored juice, whatever that means. I also picked up some of the Moevenpick ice cream I tried earlier.
As I was walking out, there were two guys playing their guitars and singing. I heard the song and almost screamed for joy when I realized it was an American one - "Rock Around the Clock," the theme song for Happy Days.
I found myself waiting at the same bus stop that I was the other day when I was forced to give up my seat. I didn't even dare sit down this time. I did get some good pictures of another clock tower in Bern, in Barenplatz. It was built in 1645 and renovated in the 1930s. I'm intrigued as to how it's still standing, because we Americans can't even build houses to last 100 years.
It wasn't a very eventful day but I did manage to take a bunch of pictures. I will post them later. Tomorrow I'm heading to Gornergrat, a mountaintop in Zermatt. You can check out the webtsite for it at www.gornergrat.ch.
Until then,
Love,
Jessica
